THE TEST

Meta's Muse can send, post and buy in your name. Out of the box it asks first for most of that. Meta also says your Muse "learns over time which decisions need your sign off." We wanted that written down where we can read it. Tip 1 does that in three taps.

THE RECEIPT

Tip 1: make it ask first.

  1. Check the setting. Open Settings, then Permissions. Connectors should say "Ask for some actions." Muse ships on that. It asks before every write action, like sending a message or making a purchase. If you want a yes or no on everything it does, reads included, pick "Always ask." That one is the strictest.

  2. Write the rule. In chat, type: Add to your Soul file: always ask before you send, post or spend. The Soul file holds its boundaries, and your Muse carries it into every chat.

  3. Check it took. Tap its icon, then Identity, then Soul. Your rule sits right there in the file. If you can't find it, the rule didn't stick. Ask again.

Why bother? You can't unsend an email. Meta's own help page says some actions "cannot be reversed, just like if you were doing them yourself."

Before tip 1: the three settings we change first. If you saw our first video, you have these.

  1. Training off. Settings, Data controls, "Help improve our AI models." Switch it off. It starts on, and turning it off covers your past chats too.

  2. Keep it asking. Tip 1, above.

  3. One connector at a time. Settings, Connectors. Give it only what the job needs. Every connector shows it more of your life.

Two more calls from that test. We keep the bank and payments out until it earns trust. And if it asks to be your Android default assistant, Android warns that it can see your messages and anything apps share with it. Say yes if you like, and leave "Use screen and app data" off.

STEAL THIS

The rule, word for word:

❝

Add to your Soul file: always ask before you send, post or spend.

Then the order: training off, "Ask for some actions" (or "Always ask"), one connector at a time, no bank yet.

THE BILL

Time: two minutes. Cost: zero. You keep an agent that stops and asks before it spends your money or your name, and a rule you can open and read.

Next tip: now it asks first. Next, the one button on that screen you should never tap.

New tips every Tuesday and Friday. The Receipt lands once a week.
